Brightest Faith: Is it wrong of me to go trick-or-treating?
10.30.04 (3:38 pm)   [edit]
To Clarify: This is talking about trick-or-treating, the act of going door to door and collecting candy for wearing a costume.
No, it isn't wrong to trick-or-treat. Why?
You can find the answer to the question in the First Epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 8.
Its concerning food offered to false idols. We all know that there is but one God, of whom are all things. But not everyone knows this, as you'll know. Paul said that there are people in that day that ate food offered to idols knowing that the idol was false, defiling themselves against it. But if we eat that meat after that person has gotten up and left, and we being sons of God (a son of God having no respect to gender, so either male or female), we know that meat is meat and that eating it doesn't change a thing. We know that that god (and there are things that people call gods, but there is one God, which you know) is false. So why let the meat go to waste? Eating it wont mean anything other than eating the meat!

But the problem comes in when your brother in Christ sees you, that might not have that knowledge, and sees you sitting at the idol's temple eating the sacrifice. He might think its okay for him to eat the meat of this false god! So then if you turn this poor brother away from Christ, it would surely be a grave sin! And that's a sin against our Christ! So it would have been better to have never tasted the flesh of meat all the days of your live than to commit this sin. We, under Christ, know that the fullness of the earth is God's and there isn't anything that we can't eat. When that silver chord parts, our bodies return to the dust and ash of the ground that God took them from. But if the liberty of eating this were to break someone else's conscience against the kingdom of our Christ, it's no laughing matter.

So trick-or-treating. We know that the people walking around in costumes are getting candy, and that halloween is something false. But if someone says to you that you shouldn't be trick-or-treating, or asks you if you're going to trick-or-treat, being their sibling in Christ, make sure to tell them about the meat sacrificed to false idols. So that they have the knowledge, and don't think that you're giving into God's adversary and sinning with your action, but if your liberty deceives someone into thinking that you're actually wholeheartedly indulging in some pagan holiday, then be sure to let them know. Otherwise, it's better not to go and trick-or-treat at all.

Hi Iaasc! I like to disagree with your agruement about trick-or-treating being ok for a believer. The scripture that you have chosen has shown no support of trick-or-treating. It shows the support of if you want to eat food given to idols. The background of the tradition od Halloween deals with people dressing up as costumes and masks to scare away the evil spirits and other things that deals with witchcraft. Even though when it has came to the U.S. the bases and essence of the religion is still present even though Americans have changed the reason of dressing up. Even though the meaning has changed the same thing still applies of dealing with witchcraft, sorocery, and other things not of the Lord. By giving candy to the kids in rheir costumes you are accepting the principles of the previous origin of the holiday as being ok.
As christians we are not to conform to this world and by giving out candy to a holiday that has such a bad origin you are accepting it because the world does trick-or-treat. The world is not our final authority, but the Word of God and the Lord Jesus Christ is.

Why can't you see past the carnal and see the spiritual? While Christ was here on earth and spoke to the Pharisees and Sadduccees, He told them that the point of the law and the commandments was to (1) love God with all that you are, and (2) to love your neighbour as if you'd love yourself. And if you go through the commandments, and all of the law, you would see just that, and Christ told them the spirit of the law. So if Paul wrote this by the Holy Spirit, what's the difference between meat and candy? Can you see through to the spirit of what Paul is trying to say? By giving candy or dressing up in costumes, even though I know that witchcraft is false and all that practice witchcraft practice in vain, am I partaking in the same falseness that they're indulging in? Even if I worship the one true God with all that God's given me to praise Him with? Absolutely not. Knowing the truth, to me eating candy is eating candy. And dressing in costumes with friends and having a fun time is just that. Do you have faith? The fullness of the earth is God's. No food, whether its meat or candy, can destroy the work of God. All things are God's, but it's a sin to the person that eats without faith that God gave them liberty to eat it, which He did. The Epistle to the Romans Chapter 14.
Verse 21, "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak."
Verse 22, "Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth."
Then this: Verse 23, "And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin."
But Lampra, I'm happy that you call the Lord Jesus Christ your Lord. Even though I might offend you, I'm happy that you're not offended in Him.

From last night... The word "satan" doesn't appear in the Epistle of James, but...
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
It calls satan "the devil," like in Revelations where it says, "the one called the devil and satan."

And in Christ's parable (in Matthew Chapter 13):
Verse 38, "The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;"
Verse 39, "The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels."
It calls satan the devil there, too...
Verse 40, "As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world."
