posted by: Tim (reply) post date: 05.19.09 (7:02 pm) This is ridiculous - number 4, loving the world means you're in legion with Satan? Since when did reviling life and your fellow man become Christian? If I'm going to be judged, I'd rather it be by a higher power, or at least someone with enough sense to make a less radical interpretation of the Bible. posted by: Isaac (reply) post date: 05.22.09 (8:34 am) Reply to: Without addressing your misunderstanding of the text, that *is* what it literally says, by the way: 1 John 2:15 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." If any man loves the world, the love of the Father isn't in him. Literally. Now, let's dig under the surface of the soil of the text and find the hidden treasure of understanding lying beneath. First, let's define who the "world" is. The Greek word is Kosmos, meaning, "the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ," but it can also mean, "world affairs, the aggregate of things earthly." This isn't, in this context, the sense of 'your fellow man' or general humanity which God Himself loves (John 3:16), but the properties of that part of humanity that is in rebellion against God. We're not to love God-hating rebellion, nor the world-system accompanying and harboring it. The adultery-billboards, the pornography and fornication-condoning actors, the lewdness and disregard for the name of Jesus - a true believer in Christ isn't going to love those things. If someone professes to be saved, yet they're living a life that sent Jesus to the cross, their profession isn't true. Second, we have to notice that it doesn't say 'hate the world,' or even 'revile life,' as you suggested. It says agapao me kosmos, 'love not the world,' which is entirely different. Third, you have to take into account the *context* of the verse. The next two verses say, 1 John 2:16-17, "For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever." So, what we're to not love are not only the world-system and those who lead people in rebellion against God, but specifically those things of the world that are not from the Father. They come from the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. Lastly, you also have to take into account the other teachings of Jesus: Jesus taught to love your neighbor. Then, he taught a parable, the Good Samaritan, that meant to love your neighbor is to show mercy on him. He also taught to love even your enemies. He taught Gentile-hating Jews that it wasn't enough with God to just greet other Jews, but Gentiles also. Also, by posting this post, I judge no one - the point of the list is so that you can judge *yourself*, based on the teachings of Jesus through John. There are only two people who can judge you: God and yourself. So, before you judge someone of having a radical view, please judge yourself first and check your understanding of the text. |
