Self-Discipline and 1 Tim 4:7
06.29.08 (2:00 am)   [edit]

These are verses that relate to 1 Tim 4:7 - Exercise yourself toward godliness...
1 Tim 3:16 - "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness..."
Conclusion - Godliness is a great mystery in the Word of God. It continues in this first in describing specific aspects of the ministry of our Lord. This verse is preceded by Paul explaining why he wrote the epistle: so that they'd know how to behave themselves IN the church of God.
1 Tim 6:11 - "But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness."
Conclusion - These are fruits of the Holy Spirit but here we're encouraged to 'follow after' them. So, it's encouraging us to follow after the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
1 Tim 6:12 - "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses."
Conclusion - It describes FAITH as the FIGHT. It describes profession of the faith and eternal life as the qualifying factors for fighting.
1 Tim 1:4 - "Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do."
Conclusion - We will be edified in godliness by faith.
Acts 24:16 - And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
Conclusion - Paul's EXERCISING had its end in have a clean conscience. He exercised himself towards godliness in that his conscience would be clear with 2 parties: (1) God, and, (2) men.
Hebrews 5:14 - But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Conclusion - Maturing to full age in Christ and having a sense of discernment comes from EXERCISING senses by reason of USE.
Titus 2:11-12 - For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Conclusion - The grace of God powers self-discipline and exercise; grace teaches us; This grace leads/teaches us to deny ungodliness and lusts and drives us to live like Christ.
Verse 14 goes on to tell of how Jesus is the one to do it: "that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto humself a peculiar people, zealous of good works."

Indirect verses:
2 Tim 3:5 - "Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. "
Conclusion - We have the power and form of Godliness in Christ Jesus through salvation.
2 Tim 3:12 - "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."
Conclusion - We should live godly in Christ Jesus.
